If you have a loved one who has been the victim of a homicide, manslaughter, road death, or a mass fatality, a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) will be your main point of contact throughout the investigation.
Their primary purpose is that of an investigator. They will work with the close loved ones and next of kin of the victim to provide the necessary support and guidance through such a traumatic time, whilst gathering evidence and information from a victim’s family – including physical evidence, personal statements, and background information on the deceased – to help determine what has happened, and bring any offenders to justice.
We understand how devastating your loss will be, and the FLO will work with you in a sensitive and compassionate manner to provide timely information about the investigation’s progress, signpost to support services, explain the criminal justice system, and provide support with viewing a body. With an active investigation, there will be some details they cannot share due to the risk of compromising justice.
They will document any requests you make and record all contact to maintain integrity of the investigation.
In very rare circumstances, they may also be involved in cases involving high risk missing persons.
