Many towns are now served by a CCTV monitoring system operated by the local council. These cameras record incidents as they happen and provide useful evidence for the Police when preparing a case for Court.
Although these systems are monitored live by experienced CCTV Operators, these services would benefit from the assistance of an extra pair of eyes to help spot unknown live incidents as they are happening. This assistance would help with the surveillance of priority hotspots and maintain a proactive monitoring presence while experienced CCTV Operators are responding to reported incidents.
We are looking for volunteers who are willing to take on this important task.
What you will be doing
The role will include:
Monitoring of live CCTV camera images
Liaising with CCTV Operators & police officers
Keeping accurate logs of activities and events
Assisting CCTV Operators in their duties
Skills, experience and qualities needed
The role requires volunteers to have a good eye for detail, and ability to monitor body language and interpret social situations. Good geographical knowledge of Skegness, Boston, Spalding, and other areas is an advantage.
IT skills will be required with some knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Proprietary CCTV monitoring and logging software will be in use. Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to log actions and inform the work of CCTV operators. Able to work as part of a wider team.
No specific experience of operating CCTV is required.
Location and times
The role will be based in the local CCTV office of the local council (Boston). There is some flexibility in the days and times required and these will be agreed with the volunteer. A web-based system of available time slots will be employed. The role will require a regular commitment of about 6 hours per week. Volunteers will always be completing their role alongside CCTV operators.
Training and support available
All volunteers receive a local induction and a volunteer handbook with all the information you will need to support you in your role. Full ‘on the job’ training will be provided by the CCTV staff at the council and a local line manager, as well as the support of the Volunteer Team at police HQ.
Expenses will be paid for travelling between your home and the CCTV office if appropriate.
This role will require a security check (vetting), a health check and for you to sign an agreement to maintain confidentiality, as you may have access to sensitive material.
