We can now confirm that we are no longer treating the death of 58-year-old Darren Sweetland as unexplained, and we are now preparing a file for the coroner.
We can now confirm that the man who was found dead in Brayford Pool yesterday (Monday 6 May) is Darren Sweetland (58).
Mr Sweetland’s family has been informed, and ask for privacy while they deal with their loss.
Our investigation into his death is ongoing, and we continue to appeal for anyone else with information to come forward.
We are appealing for witnesses and information into the death of a man whose body was found in the Brayford Pool in the early hours of this morning.
Our Force Control Room received a report that a man was in the water near to the flyover bridge at 12.40am. Officers were immediately deployed and he was taken from the water with assistance from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue.
Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He is described as white, in his 50s with very short grey/blonde hair, grey/blonde facial hair, and a slim build. He was wearing dark trousers and jumper, and black trainers.
We are keeping an open mind about the circumstances of his death, which is currently being treated as unexplained, and have now launched an investigation.
We remain on scene by the fly-over end of the Brayford Pool on the Waterside North side, and officers are also conducting enquiries on the other side of the marina and in the nearby area. We expect to be in the area until at least the afternoon.
We are now asking for anyone with information about how he came to be in the water to come forward. If you were on a night out in the area last night (Sunday 5 May), into this morning, please check mobile phone footage and see if you may have captured anything with a man matching his description.
We are keen to see any footage of him prior to going into the water, as well as anything which may have captured him entering the water.
Any information, no matter how small or insignificant you think it might be will be helpful; please get in touch and let us decide if it’s relevant.
If you can help, please contact 101 quoting incident 12 of 6 May, or email [email protected] quoting the same number.
