A Lincoln response officer is taking on a challenge with a difference… a 10K run in full riot gear.
PC Chris Jones is aiming to complete the Lincoln 10K on Sunday 14 April, whilst kitted out in Public Order protective clothing including padding, guards, shield and helmet.
This kit is designed to protect officers and not for running any distance in, let alone over six miles, so this will equate to a gruelling challenge. PC Jones said, “You have to do something really daft to raise plenty of money for good causes and I think this fits the bill. I’m not a runner by any stretch of the imagination but am looking forward to the challenge. The equipment involves full body armour, a helmet and a shield which is all very cumbersome, but I hope to complete the challenge before the roads reopen. I am so grateful to friends, family, colleagues, and bosses for the donations and messages of support so far and now hope to raise £999 for a wonderful cause. Any encouragement from the side lines on 14 April would be extremely welcome.”
PC Jones is determined to take on the challenge in order to raise money and awareness for the charity COPS (Care of Police Survivors). COPS provides peer support and access to counselling services to help surviving family members rebuild their shattered lives. Tracy Withers, from COPS Fundraising said, “This is quite a feat which Chris is undertaking and we are extremely grateful for his support both in raising funds for and awareness of the charity. Now in its 21st year, COPS supports the families of Police officers and staff who have died on duty. It is only with the help we receive from our amazing supporters such as Chris that we are able to continue delivering our services completely free of charge and for as long as they are needed. Sending very best wishes from everyone here at COPS – thanks Chris and good luck.”
Chief Superintendent Paul Timmins wanted to offer encouragement and support on behalf of Lincolnshire Police. He said, “Chris is passionate about helping others and this is a fun (?) way of raising much needed funds for COPS. They are a fantastic charity who support policing families at their darkest moment. Please help Chris by sponsoring him and give him the added motivation of knowing his temporary discomfort of running 10k around Lincoln will be more than worth it. Good luck Chris!”
