Lincoln man charged with terrorism offences

Update as of 4.25pm

Ben John has been released on bail. He will next appear at the Old Bailey in London on 4th December.

Original release

A Lincoln man was arrested at 7.40am this morning in Addison Drive, Lincoln.

Ben John (20) of Addison Drive, was taken to a station and charged with seven offences under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act.

These charges relate to possessing a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.  It is alleged that the offences relate to right-wing terrorism and he is due to appear before Westminster Magistrates today (18 November).

John was previously arrested as part of a pre-planned operation carried out by force Special Branch officers from Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands (CTP EM) on 7 January 2020.

He was released under investigation while the case was investigated.

Assistant Chief Constable Kerrin Wilson says:

“We can’t currently discuss the details of this case due to the active criminal proceedings but these charges show how seriously we take offences of this nature.

“If someone has revealed to you a plan to harm others, or you know they hold information which could be used to plan or prepare for an act of terrorism, it is vital you report it as soon as possible.

“Suspicious activity can be reported to the police by calling confidentially on 0800 789 321 or visit act.campaign.gov.uk.”
