Update, 4:25pm, January 4: Our investigation into a house fire at Kirton, in which three people died, is continuing.
Emergency services were called to the detached house on Peartree Road just before 3am on New Year’s Day.
In total, five people were involved in this incident. Two men, aged 24 and 32, and a woman, aged 27, died. Two women were taken to hospital. They have since been released.
We are treating this as a domestic-related murder investigation, but we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this. We are not yet in a position to name those who died.
Detective Chief Inspector Karl Whiffen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: “This is a complex investigation due to the circumstances. Specialists are at the scene and are working diligently as we try to understand what happened.
“We are also supporting the families of those involved in this awful tragedy. I would like to re-state our message to media to not contact them.
“I am aware that some inaccurate information has appeared in the media since the incident and would ask people not to speculate on this case.
“I cannot say at this stage when the investigation will be completed, but at the end of the process we will submit a file to the coroner.”
We are keen to hear from anyone who has information about the occupants of the address, or anyone who was driving in or near Peartree Road, Kirton, between 3pm on New Year’s Eve and 3am on New Year’s Day. We would also like to hear from anyone who has dashcam footage from this time, or may have seen anything which might assist us. Update, 4pm, January 3: We are re-stating our appeal to media not to contact the families of those involved in this incident, as it is causing significant distress. Any updates on the incident will be posted on our News Centre.
Update at 15:10 on January 2
We can confirm that the three people who died were:
- A woman aged 27
- A man aged 24
- A man aged 32
All three were British.
The two people taken to hospital have since been released. In total there were five people involved in this incident, the investigation is ongoing and officers are not seeking anyone else as part of their inquiries.

Update at 12.40pm on January 2:
Following the house fire in Kirton in the early hours of 1st January 2019 Police and Fire Investigators are continuing to examine the scene. Sadly we are now able to confirm that three people have been found dead within the property.
It will take some time to formally identify them but at this time we believe we know who they are and their families have been notified and family liaison officers are in contact with them.

Supt Di Coulson says “This is a tragic crime and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved. We are in contact with the families and will ensure that this is a thorough investigation as we try and understand what happened.”
UPDATE AT 1600 NEW YEAR'S DAY
Police and Fire investigators continue to examine the scene of the fire at a detached house in Peartree Road, Kirton which was reported about 0300 this morning.
Because of the ferocity of the fire this is going to take a number of days to complete and establish how the fire started.
As the investigation continues we would be keen to hear from anyone who has any information about the occupants of the address or anyone who was driving in or near Peartree Road, Kirton up to 0300 on this morning, New Year’s morning and may have dash cam footage of the house before the fire started. Please call 101 if you think you can help.
We are in the process of contacting who we believe to be the next of kin of the person who died and will then begin the process of formal identification.
The investigation is being conducted by officers from the East Midlands Specialist Operations Unit.

Emergency Services were called to a house fire in Peartree Road, Kirton just before 0300 this morning (New Year's Day). It is believed that one person has died and two have been taken to hospital with injuries which are not thought to be life threatening. The cause of the fire will be investigated and as soon as we have more detail we will release it.
