Support for the Families and Carers of Drug and Alcohol Users
Oasis is an independent Lincolnshire Charity, set up in 2000 by two mothers who realised that they weren’t alone. Oasis do not offer counselling, but caring and friendly support based on personal experience. Every aspect of Oasis is confidential; they only use first names and you needn’t mention anything that you don’t feel comfortable about.
If you believe a loved one is using drugs or excessive alcohol, it is important not to panic. Show you care; chastising or trying to frighten them with horror stories does not help. Calmness and accurate, truthful information does help. As a parent your job is to know what you are talking about, so that your guidance can be trusted and followed by your child. Many families feel guilty, ashamed and unable to cope with many of the spin-off problems of substance misuse, for example, theft and deceit.
We cannot offer a solution, but Oasis can help you move on to a greater understanding of substance misuse, end your isolation and help you cope.
