Incident 242 of 27 September, 2012
Police are warning the public after burglars posing as water company officials targeted an 85-year-old woman.
This incident took place at around 1pm yesterday in Grayson Green, Wellingore. Two men knocked on the door saying they were from “The Water Board”, that the mains supply had been contaminated and that they needed to check the supply at the address.
One man turned taps on and off in the kitchen and bathroom and talked to the woman. While this was happening the other man searched the property and stole £20 cash and a fuel top-up card.
The men were wearing ID tags, but they did not hand them over for inspection.
Residents are being urged to never let anyone into their properties without taking their ID and closing and locking the door while making a phone call to the company in question to check they are genuine. It they are genuine they will have been trained to expect this and will not be offended. If you have any concerns call the police immediately.
Police are appealing for anyone who may be able to identify the offenders to get in touch with them as soon as possible. One was white, around 30-years-old and 6ft tall. He had short black hair, a long thin face and a big narrow nose. The other was between 30 and 35-years-old and had a chubby face. Both were wearing dark sports jackets.
