Crimestoppers Press Release

Lincoln’s taxis to spread Crimestoppers’ message on criminal damage and excessive alcohol

Photocall: 7pm at Brayford Wharf North in Lincoln on Friday 23rd July

Crimestoppers is continuing its Gauge Your Behaviour! Campaign at Brayford Wharf North in Lincoln on Friday 23rd July at 7pm by using local taxis to remind young people in Lincoln that damaging people and property is still a criminal offence, even after a few drinks. The campaign, using the message “Your night out, Your city, Your call” will appear on the outsides of Lincoln’s taxis and also in tipseats inside for the next four weeks.

The campaign also urges young people in Lincoln to give information anonymously to the crime-fighting charity about anyone they know or have seen who has committed criminal damage or other crimes. As part of the campaign, the Crimestoppers team of volunteers are working in partnership with other groups in providing a variety of activities, information and guidance. Volunteers will meet with young people to let them know that damaging people or property is a criminal offence. The other groups include Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service and the City of Lincoln Anti Social Behaviour Team. Sue Langley, Crimestoppers’ East Midlands Regional Manager, said: “A few too many drinks can make some people think that criminal damage to people and property is not as serious as they would think it was when sober. “Our message is alcohol is no excuse and remind everyone coming into Lincoln for a night out to ensure they gauge their behaviour. “We also want to make sure that they know that they can come to Crimestoppers if they want to give information anonymously about this or any other type of criminal activity. We want to know what they know, not who they are.” Those with information on crime can contact the crime fighting charity anonymously via 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org <http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org>

People in the East Midlands do appreciate that Crimestoppers operates in this way because with their help, last year Crimestoppers received 6,833 actionable pieces of information from people living in the East Midlands which is an increase of 8 per cent from the previous year. As the result of this information given to Crimestoppers in the region 732 people were arrested.
