Craig Anthony Smith Aged 27,  Scorer Street, Lincoln - Sentenced Today (19/07/10) At Lincoln Crown Court By Judge Heath

At approximately 6.00am on Wednesday 4th March 2009 Police were called to an address on Saxon Street, Lincoln where they discovered the occupant, Anthony DAWIDOWSKI aged 54, suffering from serious knife wounds.  He was taken to Lincoln County Hospital were he underwent a series of operations, before spending a significant time in the intensive care unit.

There was nothing to suggest that this was a random attack and the Police immediately launched an attempted murder investigation where they actively sought the defendant, Craig SMITH.  SMITH handed himself into Lincoln Police Station the next day and was interviewed, charged and remanded in custody at Lincoln Prison. He was found guilty of attempted murder in May 2010 after a trial at Lincoln Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Suzanne Davies of Lincoln CID, who led the investigation says, "This was a difficult case to investigate from the beginning as there were only two people present when the attack took place.

Mr DAWIDOWSKI was stabbed eleven times and effectively left for dead, because the offender took the victim's telephones and Mr DAWIDOWSKI had no means to contact the emergency services.

A dedicated team of Detectives worked tirelessly over the months building the case in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution Service.

We are very pleased with the sentence handed down by Judge Heath this afternoon (19/07/10). Mr Smith can be an extremely violent person and the fact that the victim survived is no thanks to him, but for a visit from one of his friends and the skills of medical staff Mr DAWIDOWSKI might well have died. Thankfully he is now on the road to a full recovery.

Judge Heath also made mention of the fact that Smith is considered to pose a high risk towards his partners and ex partners as well as posing a significant risk to members of the public in the future. Also taking into account his previous convictions Judge Heath imposed a sentence of imprisonment for public protection. Smith will serve a minimum of ten years in prison before he can apply for parole, this means that he will removed from society for a considerable period of time.

I would like to thank the team who investigated this incident and the Crown Prosecution Service along with the prosecution team for all their hard work in bringing this man to justice."

Youngsters Rewarded For Safe Cycling

Eight young people from New Leake School are to receive certificates at a special assembly after successfully completing a Bikewise cycling proficiency course.

The course is funded by the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership who design the programme and provide the ‘Safer Cycling’ workbooks.  The practical sessions were delivered by PCSOs Jayne Richardson and Nigel Miller from the Spilsby, Wainfleet and Burgh Le Marsh Neighbourhood Policing Team who began by teaching the group basic cycle care and how to check that their equipment was safe and roadworthy.

Over the subsequent four weeks, the pupils received a total of 71/2 hours of practical training, learning balance, signalling and stopping procedures.  Once the basics had been mastered, the group of 9 and 10 year-olds left the playground and ventured onto the public road, gaining confidence in turning, overtaking parked vehicles and pulling out from a minor to a major road.

“The youngsters have worked very hard, both in the classroom and out on the road”, said PCSO Miller.  “Some of the pupils will be using their bikes to get to secondary school in a year or so from now and the skills they have learnt during this course will really make a difference in keeping them safe and confident when they are out on the road”.

The certificate presentation will take place at the school on Wednesday 21 July at 2.30pm.

Day Of Action To Combat The Metal Thieves

Local Police, government and industry representatives from East Lincolnshire joined together in partnership on Wednesday 14 July to support the National Metal Theft Day of Action aimed at addressing the issue of metal theft.

The national initiative was led by British Transport Police and focused on working with the scrap metal industry to reduce opportunities for thieves to sell on stolen metal.

Within each Neighbourhood Policing Area in Lincolnshire significant work has been done, not only to target offenders, but also to build effective relationships with scrap metal dealers. This joint approach reduces the opportunity for offenders to dispose of stolen metal by supporting the dealers who are equally concerned about stolen materials being offered for sale.

On Wednesday, officers from Lincolnshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit carried out joint patrols with staff from the Environment Agency, across East Lindsey, checking vehicles laden with scrap metal to ensure compliance with legislation as well as dip-testing diesel.

PC Nic Hanson, Scrap Metal Liaison Officer for the Boston and East Lindsey area, visited 18 scrap metal merchants throughout the day to check their records, as, by law, they have to maintain records of people and vehicles weighing in metal.

“The illegal trade in scrap metal costs the British economy £360 each year which is almost a million pounds every day”, explained PC Hanson. “Contrary to some opinion, it is far from being a victimless crime as thefts of items such as manhole covers and railway cabling put members of the public at significant risk of harm”.

Stolen items that have been recovered in the county in recent months have included a bronze statue taken from the Channel Islands, aluminium beer kegs and catalytic converters.  Further afield, the bronze propellers from the Royal Yacht Britannia were stolen in June 2008.

Anyone with information about individuals engaged in metal theft or dealing in stolen metal is asked to contact Lincolnshire Police on 0300 111 0300 or call the charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime in progress call 999.
