Rogue Traders - Sudbrooke Drive, Lincoln - Incident 253 of 15 July 2010

Police are appealing for information following an incident which occurred on Sudbrooke Drive, Lincoln on Tuesday 13 July.  A 69-year-old lady was visited by three men who carried out some fencing work for her.  She had agreed to this work and paid them for it.  The following day, they returned and started undertaking work which she did not agree for them to do, such as clearing out the guttering and painting the walls.  They then returned every day demanding to be paid for this work.  The incident was brought to the attention of the police when the lady went to the bank in a state of distress to withdraw money to pay the men.  The bank worker called the police after being told the circumstances of why the money was being withdrawn.

Detective Inspector Simon Lovett says, "This type of crime is particularly despicable because it targets the elderly and vulnerable in our communities".  "This lady was distressed and frightened by what happened to her, and scared to be in her own home in case these men came back demanding money".  "I'm full of praise for the bank worker who alerted us to this crime, and would encourage people to look out for each other in the same way".  "By being vigilant, checking on friends and neighbours and reporting suspicious people and vehicles, we can all contribute towards driving these criminals out of our county".

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity within their neighbourhood is encouraged to contact the police, providing as much information as possible, such as times, locations and descriptions of suspicious people and registration numbers of vehicles.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity in Sudbrooke Drive, Lincoln between Tuesday 13 July and Thursday 15 July, or who has information about this incident is asked to contact Lincolnshire Police on 0300 111 0300 quoting incident number 253 of 15 July.

Youngsters Get On Their Bikes And Wise-Up

Thirteen young people from Alford Primary School have been awarded certificates at a special assembly after successfully completing a Bikewise cycling proficiency course.

The course is funded by the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership who design the programme and provide the ‘Safer Cycling’ workbooks.  The practical sessions were delivered by PCSO Dee Phillips from the Alford, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea Neighbourhood Policing Team who began by teaching the group basic cycle care and how to check that their equipment was safe and roadworthy.

Over the subsequent four weeks, the pupils received a total of 71/2 hours of practical training, learning balance, signalling and stopping procedures.  Once the basics had been mastered, the group of 10 and 11 year-olds left the playground and ventured onto the public road, gaining confidence in turning, overtaking parked vehicles and pulling out from a minor to a major road.

“The youngsters have worked very hard, both in the classroom and out on the road”, said PCSO Phillips.  “Some of the pupils will be cycling to their new secondary schools next term and this course has given them the skills and confidence to stay safe when they are out on the road”.

GENERAL AND MISCELLANEOUS

Lincolnshire Police Free Skidpan Training For New And Young Drivers Continues Throughout The Summer

During the summer months, Lincolnshire Police are running their popular programme of skidpan training for the county’s new and young drivers.  This is aimed at helping to instil good road practice into drivers who are 25 years old and under, or who have passed their driving test in the last 12 months, to enable them to develop their driving skills and help to keep them as safe as possible on the roads.

Lincolnshire Police’s Driver Training Manager, Clive Pouncey said, “Statistically, young drivers have a high likelihood of being involved in road traffic collisions on our county’s roads”.  “Nationally, one in five will be involved in an accident in the first six months and within two years of passing their test, 200 young drivers will be killed on the roads”. “The aim of this programme is to help to reduce the number of these casualties and fatalities on our county’s roads by giving young drivers the chance to improve their skills and build up their driving experience, particularly in adverse conditions”.  “All this is done in a safe environment with individual tuition from advanced police driving instructors, in police cars”.  “We hope that young people will take us up on our offer, which is completely free of charge”.  “The sessions will be enjoyable and fun, as well as teaching skills which may well save lives”.

The sessions are being held at the skidpan at Lincolnshire Police Headquarters in Nettleham, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer.  Clive Pouncey says, “We have had a good take up of these sessions and the feedback from participants has been really positive”.  “We would like as many young people as possible to benefit from this opportunity, so are encouraging them to take part”.

Clive is reminding people that the skidpan sessions are only available until the end of August, and after that, they will not be run again until next summer.  Anyone who is interested in booking a session should contact Lincolnshire Police on 01522 558936 in order to secure a place.  Currently, there are still places available for July and August.  To be eligible, people must be 25 years old or under, or have passed their test in the last 12 months, and reside in the Lincolnshire Police area.  Appointments will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Clive Pouncey finished by saying, “These sessions are an investment in the safety of our young and new drivers, as well as other road users, and we hope that there will be a good take up”.  “I’m convinced that the key to reducing the number of casualties of young people on our roads is to provide them with the skills they need to be good drivers, as well as giving them an understanding of how they can increase their chances of staying safe through their own attitude and behaviour”.

Note to Editors - Clive Pouncey is available for further information, interviews or a demonstration of the skidpan training.  Please contact HQ Press Office on 01522 558026 to arrange.
