Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership Press Release
Humberside, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire Police launch combined enforcement and education operation aimed at increasing safety of motorcycle riders.
In 2008 Adrian Small, a 45 year old motorcyclist, was involved in a head on collision with another motorcyclist who tragically died as a result. Adrian is helping to raise awareness of the consequences of motorcycle accidents.
Motorcyclists are significantly more likely to be involved in a collision than any other road user. As with many areas of the UK, Humberside, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire have seen a high casualty rate among motorcyclists and the riders and pillion passengers involved are often from outside the region. Whilst not all collisions involve high speed, a large proportion (On Lincolnshire roads 68.2%) involve inappropriate use of speed coupled with contributory factors (Loss of control, failure to look properly, failure to judge other persons speed or path, poor turn or manoeuvre, aggressive driving)
The Police Forces of Lincolnshire, Humberside and South Yorkshire are now working together to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the roads.
The collaboration involves the following:
Cross border enforcement campaigns.
Combined operations for major motorcycle events including MCN Weekend at Butlins and British Superbike events at Cadwell Park.
Providing training and education opportunities including Bikesafe courses, Ride (rider training programme - Humberside & South Yorkshire) and Lincolnshire’s Performance Plus training days. (Further information available)
Significant joint presence at motorcycle events and meets aimed at providing rider education.
The three Police Forces aim to attract a large number of motorcyclists to training courses throughout 2010. They will also collaborate throughout the year to target drivers and riders who travel at high speed and put other road users at risk. Our aim is to make the roads safer for all.
Adrian Small, a 45 year old motorcyclist knows all about the potential dangers of riding a motorcycle. In 2008 Adi was involved in a head on collision with another motorcyclist who tragically died as a result. It is the victims of such incidents that suffer in the long term.
Adi has lost his job and has spent a total of 13 weeks in hospital over the past 2 years. Adi has had 10 surgical operations totalling 19 hours and there are 2 procedures pending. His other injuries include a broken shoulder blade, an open fracture to radius in right arm, and a collapsed lung. Adi has also suffered ligament damage to his right knee and his internal injuries mean that his lungs are operating at 60% capacity.
Doctor’s cannot mend Adi, and he may yet lose his arm. The pain receptors in his brain constantly give him a feeling of pain in his arm. His eldest son Luke, has given up his love of motorcycling because of his father’s injury. His youngest son Kieran was 7 weeks old when this occurred. He has not held him properly since.
The families of those who die on our roads have a constant sense of loss that does not go away.
Adrian Small states: ‘I cannot turn the clock back to undo what happened to me, but with more education and training we can reduce the amount of people being injured on our roads. My collision took a mere second to occur, but the effects will last a lifetime’
