Hard Work But No Play?

Ingoldmells, Chapel St Leonards and Hogsthorpe Neighbourhood Policing Team has expressed disappointment at the news that the Chapel St Leonards village play area may ultimately be dismantled following the rejection of a planning application. Local PCSOs have worked alongside Neighbourhood Response Officers and youth services such as the Funk Bus to reduce instances of anti-social behaviour in the park and help minimise the impact created by the equipment’s close proximity to neighbouring houses. PC Seb Clarke, the Community Beat Manager for the team explained “We were not involved in the original planning consultation for the facility but, as an organisation, the Police has a wealth of experience when it comes to play parks and multi-use games areas and we understand the potential problems and pitfalls.  We are always happy to share this knowledge with our community partners and to work with them to achieve safe and happy neighbourhoods”. In recent months, Lincolnshire Police has supported the Health and Safety Executive in securing an Improvement Order for the area amid fears that the unfinished rubble surface was posing a danger to young people and impacting on nearby properties.  The new surface, combined with good CCTV coverage and a committed Police presence, has seen a significant reduction in the number of reports of anti-social behaviour. PC Clarke finished by saying “ We fully support local projects for young people as there is a real need in the community for suitable recreational facilities for both children and teenagers.  However, we also listen carefully to the views of all residents about issues that affect their quality of life and this is why we have devoted so much of our time and resources into effective policing of this area with excellent results.  We hope a way forward is found which benefits the whole community”.

No Cold Calling Zone Initiative In Bilsby

An initiative aimed at protecting older and vulnerable people from unwanted callers is being implemented in Bilsby village. 'No Cold Calling Zones' have been already been launched in other areas of the county and have been successfully protecting vulnerable members of communities for more than two years. The initiative has been organised by officers from the Alford Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, working closely with Lincolnshire's Trading Standards Department, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the Parish Council. The principle aim of the initiative is to offer protection against rogue traders and distraction burglars by reducing the number of cold callers in specific areas and therefore reducing the opportunity for doorstep crime. In order to alert people to the 'No Cold Calling Zone', clear signage is being erected on lampposts and this is being funded by Lincolnshire's Trading Standards. The signage, a police notice, warns potential callers that all local residents are not interested in buying goods or services on their doorstep. "This initiative focuses on looking after our older and more vulnerable members of the community," explained PCSO Dee Phillips . "We've carried out a consultation with the residents in the Thurlby Road area of the village and the feedback has been really supportive. In view of this, we are launching a zone in this area on the 9 April”. Each 'zone' has its own coordinator and all residents will be handed special information packs, produced by Trading Standards, about the initiative. Both areas will be closely monitored by all four partner agencies and all residents will be given guidance about reporting suspicious individuals or activity to the police. Graham Penn, Doorstep Crime Initiative Co-ordinator for Lincolnshire County Council's Trading Standards said, "The 'No Cold Calling Zones' have been really successful in other parts of the county and as a result, we're trying to get more set up."  Mr Penn continued, "The more information available to all our residents, the greater awareness they will have of bogus callers and distraction burglary offences. By raising their awareness the better chance we have in reducing the number of victims of this type of appalling offence." Information being shared with residents includes simple steps like fitting and using door security chains, asking to see and handle identification cards and verifying identification. Other advice also includes getting a second opinion before agreeing any work, keeping doors and windows locked when in residence, not keeping large sums of money in the house and ensuring purses, wallets and handbags are out of sight. Free security and crime prevention advice is available by contacting the local Neighbourhood Policing Team at Alford Police Station on 0300 111 0300.
