Recruitment Process

Stage 1 - Application

Note: Applications will only be issued when we are recruiting for police officers.

Before you start to apply you need to check that recruitment is open in Lincolnshire Police and that you are eligible to apply.

Your application will go through a formal papersift process.  This includes the marking of competency based answers.

Stage 2 – Assessment Centre

If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an assessment centre held at the National Police Improvement Agency (NPIA) assessment centre in Ryton near Coventry.  

Please note that you will not be allocated an assessment centre place until we have a planned date for you to start as a police officer.  Until this date is known your application will be held pending at this stage.  

You will be required at the assessment centre for approximately half a day and you will take part in the following series of exercises: 

  • a competency based structured interview –  which is made up of 4 questions
  • a numerical reasoning test
  • a verbal logical reasoning test
  • two written exercises
  • four interactive exercises.

Your performance is assessed against 7 competencies that are relevant to the role of a Police Constable.  Trained assessors measure how they perform in exercises that relate to specific competencies.

Stage 3 – Interview

If you are successful in obtaining the relevant pass mark at the assessment centre you will be invited to attend an interview at Lincolnshire Police. 

You will be required to carry out some research on Lincolnshire Police and policing issues in Lincolnshire before you attend. You will need to demonstrate why you have applied to become a police constable and why you wish to serve with Lincolnshire Police.

Stage 4 – Fitness Test

If you are successful at the interview you will be invited to a fitness test at Police Headquarters in Nettleham, Lincoln.  

The test consists of an endurance test and dynamic strength tests.  The endurance test consists of a bleep test in a 15 meter gymnasium and you must reach at least level 5.4.  The dynamic strength test is conducted on a Dyno machine you are required to perform five pushes and five back pulls.  You must be able to average 34 kg on the push and 35 kg on the pull to pass the test.

Stage 5 – Medical

If you pass the fitness stage, you will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire prior to attending an appointment with our Occupational Health Service in Lincoln for a medical examination, eyesight and hearing test.

Stage 6 - Pre-employment Checks

If you successfully pass the medical assessment we will conduct comprehensive vetting checks are request references.

Vetting

Police Checks will be conducted on yourself, your immediate family and any adult living at the same address as you.  We will also request National Security Vetting and carry out financial checks.

References

We will request references for all of your employment and educational establishments you have attended in the last five years.  Current employer references will not be taken at this stage, unless you specify that they can be

Once all the necessary checks are completed we will write to you to confirm your acceptance.

Your application will be held until we have confirmation of a start date as a police constable.  Your application is subject to your continued suitability and you must inform us of any changes to your personal circumstances.

Induction

When we have a date for you to commence as a police constable you will be invited to attend an Induction Evening.  You will meet the other applicants who will start on your intake and you will receive information about your Initial Police Learning and Development Programme.
